Cleaning a bathtub is easy as long as you are using the right product and applying the proper cleaning technique. Over time, bathtubs will develop stubborn stains that are harder to remove. To remove these unsightly discolorations and leave the bathtub looking new, consider these tips:

Porcelain
Porcelain bathtub is made from a smooth, durable material similar to stone. Of all types of bathtubs, porcelain bathtub is the most durable. It is also the most expensive!
Enamel
Enamel bathtub is prone to staining. It is also vulnerable to rust-like discolorations if you used bleach or strong acids to clean it. Enamel is an old bathtub material so this is common in older tubs.
Acrylic
An acrylic bathtub is made from a flexible but durable material similar to polymer. Because it’s made from plastic, acrylic bathtubs are prone to shape distortion. When cleaning bathtubs made from this material, you want to avoid abrasive cleaning agents like pumice. The grainy texture of pumice will leave unsightly scratches on the surface of the tub.
How to Clean Porcelain Tubs
Cleaning a porcelain tub requires abrasive cleaning agents. So make sure the tub is made from porcelain before cleaning it with an abrasive product. Otherwise, you will deal with a badly scratched bathtub after cleaning.
For porcelain tubs, use an abrasive powder. Just pour the powder directly on the stain then add a little water. Using a scouring pad, work the product in to remove the stain. For very tough stains, we recommend using a pumice stone. Again, rub the cleaning tool directly on the stain until the stain is removed.
How to Clean Enamel Tubs
To clean an enamel tub, you can use different types of commercial cleaners including detergent, shampoo, etc. What you want to avoid is using bleach. The acidic solvent will break down the enamel of the tub, leaving it badly damaged. Do not use drain cleaners as well. The strong cleanser will leave a rust-like stain on the bathtub.
To clean an enamel bathtub, get a sponge and apply the detergent. Add enough water to create suds and start scrubbing the surface clean. For very tough stains, you can use trisodium phosphates. This product will melt deep-seated dirt and cut through grease and soap scum. Just mix a tablespoon of trisodium phosphates in a gallon of hot water. Pour the solution on the bathtub. Leave the product to sit for a minute or two before scrubbing the tub clean! Hydrogen peroxide (3%), magic eraser, and spray on scum remover make great cleanser for enamel tubs too.
How to Clean Acrylic Tubs
Unlike other materials, acrylic requires frequent washing so wash the tub at least once a week. You can use a dishwashing liquid mixed with plain water to remove the stain, cut through grime, and eliminate grease. Use a soft sponge to work the product in because the material is prone to scratches. Do not use wax either because it will leave the tub slippery, increasing the risk of injuries when in use.
